Edi Gathegi Talks About ‘New Moon,’ His Final ‘Twilight’ Film

‘Things could be worse,’ actor — who plays vampire Laurent — says about leaving series.

By Amy Wilkinson
PARSIPPANY, New Jersey — Being cut from a hit television series is an actor’s worst nightmare, but for “Twilight” star Edi Gathegi, it actually was his lucky break. For seven episodes, Gathegi played Dr. Jeffrey “Big Love” Cole, one of several physicians vying for a coveted spot on Hugh Laurie’s team in “House.” It was his eventual discharge from the medical drama that freed up his schedule for “Twilight.”

The actor regaled the audience with this story and a host of “Twilight” tales — often slipping into accents (his “Kelly” character was a particular hit) and leaping out of his chair to act out scenes — during an hour-long Q&A session at the official “Twilight” convention. (“Twilight” director Catherine Hardwicke and actor Gil Birmingham also spoke at the conference.)

Gathegi confirmed that he’s seen a cut of “New Moon” and said it follows Stephenie Meyer’s novel closely. “That’s the whole point of having Stephenie Meyer as a consultant for all the books, because you know she has final approval and final say and they’re not going to do anything to upset the fan base,” he told the audience. “You guys are the driving force behind this entire thing.”

The 30-year-old spent about three weeks on the “New Moon” set and was met with a few happy changes from the first film. For one, the cloudy red contact lenses used to give the vampires their signature scarlet stares were replaced with sleeker models more closely resembling regular contacts. For another, Gathegi finally got to wear shoes. “God bless Chris Weitz,” he said. “In “Twilight’ we didn’t have shoes, because in the book they don’t have shoes — you know, nomadic vampires don’t have shoes. And I was cold, I was froze to death! But Chris was like, ‘Well, wear shoes.’ ”

When asked whether his character’s penultimate showdown was more of a fight or a chase, Gathegi remained mostly mum, but did concede that it was hard acting with something that wasn’t there. “We basically acted with a man holding a piece of cardboard shaped like a cow. So when you see the movie, look at my eyes and [decide], is he seeing a cow or is he seeing a wolf?”

Though that scene will be Gathegi’s last as vampire Laurent, he said he can’t be too upset about not returning to the saga. “Honestly, perspective. I’m happy I’m in ‘Twilight.’ I’m happy I made it to ‘New Moon.’ Things could be worse.”

He did admit one regret: never getting to sparkle in the sun.

‘Twilight’ Fans, Meet The New Ladies Of ‘Eclipse’

We give you a handy guide to the new ladies joining the ‘Twilight’ family in the third installment of the franchise.

By Larry Carroll

By now, most Twilighters know more about Kristen Stewart, Ashley Greene, Nikki Reed and the others than their own mothers. So, with filming of “Eclipse” finally under way in Vancouver, the fanbase is excited to welcome some new blood into the vampire franchise.

With that in mind, we present this handy guide to five key actresses joining the “Twilight” saga for its third installment. Much like Bella, we can all look forward to making new friends in Forks, and tomorrow we’ll take a look at the new “Eclipse” men. But to be courteous, here are the ladies first.

Actor: Catalina Sandino Moreno

Character: Maria

The Lowdown: Fan-favorite Jackson Rathbone has already expressed excitement over the fact that his role as Jasper Hale will be expanded greatly for the third “Twilight” film. Oscar-nominee Moreno may no longer be “Full of Grace,” but will now play a very different Maria. Described in Stephenie Meyer’s pages as being petite with a soft voice, Maria is the woman who turned Jasper into a bloodthirsty immortal when he was 20 years old in 1863. Her inclusion will play a major role in the young vampire threat that emerges throughout “Eclipse” and the likely-to-film-someday “Breaking Dawn.”

Actor: Julia Jones

Character: Leah Clearwater

The Lowdown: The only female werewolf in the history of the Quileute tribe, the part of Leah was targeted soon after the success of the “Twilight” movie as a star-making role for a young actress — and sure enough, names like Vanessa Hudgens, Q’Orianka Kilcher and Brenda Song were rumored for months. Instead, director David Slade chose 28-year-old relative newcomer Jones (“Hell Ride”) — a former model for the Gap, Esprit, L’Oreal and other national brands. We can look forward to seeing her transform in “New Moon” alongside her brother Seth (BooBoo Stewart), and a problematic love triangle leaves her bitter and eager to tease Jacob about his own love triangle.

Actor: Bryce Dallas Howard

Character: Victoria

The Lowdown: Technically, she isn’t a new character — in fact, the vampire Victoria is one of the most pivotal figures in the movie franchise. But in case you’ve been trapped in a cave for the last few months, sealed off from all mankind, we thought we’d mention that Bryce Dallas Howard replaced Rachelle Lefevre in “Eclipse” after the actress was unceremoniously dismissed from the franchise — a move that spurned a headline or two. The Golden Globe nominee certainly has not only the appropriate hair color, but the acting chops to go along with it — and has already begun to bond with her castmates. But without a doubt, all eyes will be on Bryce to see if she can fill Rachelle’s sizable shoes.

Actor: Tinsel Korey

Character: Emily

The Lowdown: Named after Stephenie Meyer’s sister, Emily is Leah Clearwater’s second cousin and the aunt to Claire — a character who will emerge mainly in “Breaking Dawn.” Korey, an actress best known for the Canadian TV crime drama “Rabbit Fall,” is expected to dress down her beauty with prominent scars in “Eclipse.” The markings on Emily’s face and arm serve as constant reminders of the short temper belonging to Sam Uley (Chaske Spencer), as well as the guilt he feels for harming his fiancée.

Actor: Jodelle Ferland

Character: Bree

The Lowdown: Those who expect “30 Days of Night” filmmaker Slade to bring the blood for his “Twilight” adventure know that a good amount of it could possibly revolve around the violent newborn vampire Victoria creates in an attempt to avenge the death of James (Cam Gigandet) in the first flick. The 14-year-old Ferland appeared with Kristen Stewart previously in the 2007 horror flick “The Messengers,” and has been acting since she was 5 years old. Soon fans can look forward to her shrill voice, special link with Carlisle and eventual fall-out with Jane (Dakota Fanning) and the Volturi.

‘Twilight’ Fans, Meet The New Men Of ‘Eclipse’

Get to know the three guys joining the ‘Twilight’ family in the third installment of the franchise.

By Larry Carroll

These days, Twilighters have their blinders on and are focused intently on “New Moon,” coming to theaters in November. But the momentum is going to keep on rolling with “Eclipse,” the summer 2010 film that recently began shooting in Vancouver.

On Wednesday, we introduced you to the female stars who are joining the franchise for its third installment. Now, it’s time to bring the beefcake with three soon-to-be fan favorites, each a pivotal character in the “Twilight” saga.

Actor: Xavier Samuel

Character: Riley

The Lowdown: In the wise words of both Bette Midler and Sigmund the Sea Monster, you’ve gotta have friends. Even Victoria the bloodthirsty vampire knows this, which is why she reacts to the bummer news of Cam Gigandet’s James and Edi Gathegi’s Laurent biting the dust by finding herself a new buddy. But instead of hanging out at the mall or going to a JoBros concert together, Bryce Dallas Howard’s Victoria and Xavier Samuel’s Riley will enjoy scheming against werewolves and planning to take down the Cullen clan. Fans can look forward to Samuel — a 25-year-old actor in his first major film — serving as the leader of Victoria’s newborn army, invading Bella’s room and then having a bloody battle with Edward and Seth Clearwater.

Actor: BooBoo Stewart

Character: Seth Clearwater

The Lowdown: Aside from having the coolest name of any actor since Rip Torn, the casting of BooBoo Stewart is big news to “Twilight” saga fans for a variety of reasons. One of Jacob’s shape-shifting homeys, Seth is the brother of Leah, and one of the few wolves who consider the vampires to be friends. Although glimpsed in the “New Moon” novel, filmmakers Chris Weitz and David Slade seem to have collectively decided to bump Seth into the third film. Still, he’ll be a fresh face when he finally shows up in the persona of 15-year-old cutie BooBoo — who, much like Taylor Lautner, seems to have an affinity for martial-arts/ dance/ gymnastic routines. Something tells us those two will have plenty of fun between takes.

Actor: Jack Huston

Character: Royce King

The Lowdown: Much like Catalina Sandino Moreno’s Maria, Huston’s Royce is inextricably linked to the origins of one the Cullens, and not in a manner in which they should be proud. Flashback to early 20th-century New York, where Rosalie Hale was a beautiful teenager with a bright future ahead of her. Falling for Royce King II, Rosalie will suspect that they don’t share the same sort of love as other engaged couples — and will eventually be beaten, presumably raped and left to die. These events — as well as her transformation and salvation at the hands of Carlisle — will go a long way toward explaining why Nikki Reed has spent much of the first few films with such a bad case of the Mondays. Oh, and the scene where vampire Rosalie gets revenge on her would-be killers? Just wait until blood-loving “30 Days of Night” director Slade gets his fingerprints all over that one.

Billboard

The first single has officially been confirmed for the New Moon Soundtrack! Death Cab for Cutie has written an exclusive song for the movie entitled ‘Meet Me On the Equinox.’ Below is a statement from the band about the song:

“We are very excited to be a part of this amazing series of novels set in our own backyard. It just seemed a perfect synergy that a band from the Northwest would create a song for a series of novels set in the Northwest. We wrote ‘Meet Me On the Equinox’ to reflect the celestial themes and motifs that run throughout the Twilight series and we wanted to capture that desperate feeling of endings and beginnings that so strongly affect the main characters. This song marks the first attempt that Death Cab for Cutie has ever made at contributing new, unreleased material for a film and we are proud to be a part of the Twilight legacy.” — Nick Harmer / Death Cab for Cutie

Additionally, we have the exclusive premiere of the soundtrack album cover below! The soundtrack will be in stores on October 20th, 2009, stay tuned for more information!

Exclusive: ‘New Moon’ Song By Death Cab For Cutie To Be Unveiled On MTV.com September 13

DCFC bassist Nick Harmer talks about ‘Meet Me on the Equinox,’ to premiere on Video Music Awards day.

By James Montgomery

Death Cab for Cutie‘s contribution to the “New Moon” soundtrack, “Meet Me on the Equinox,” will premiere on MTV.com on September 13, the day of the Video Music Awards.

In an exclusive interview with MTV News, DCFC bassist Nick Harmer talked about the song — which will be the lead single from the second film in the “Twilight” series — and the mysterious way it ended up on the most-anticipated soundtrack of the year.

“We didn’t expect it would be chosen for the first single — we were thinking it would be a part of the soundtrack, maybe,” Harmer laughed. “I have no idea if ['Twilight' author] Stephenie Meyer approved it or what. It’s been an exciting process, because we’ve been so removed from it. We were in L.A. for a week and we went into the studio and wrote and recorded the song and submitted it. We didn’t know where anything stood, and then we just got a call last week like, ‘Guess what — your song has been chosen as the first single.’ ”

Harmer is the first to admit that Death Cab and “Twilight” seem like an unusual pairing (only guitarist/producer Chris Walla has read the entire series), but upon closer inspection, they actually have plenty in common: most of which has to do with geography and, of course, matters of the heart.

“The big connection for us is ‘Here’s a wildly popular book series about vampires — which are awesome — set in the Northwest,’ and we happen to be from the Northwest as well, so there’s this sort of hometown pride kind of thing going on,” Harmer said. “I’m kind of happy that Stephenie Meyer put Forks, Washington, on the map for the entire globe.

“I think that a lot of our songs in general concern a lot of the things the main characters in the books are going through: There’s a lot of stuff about relationships beginning and ending, and the questioning that happens around being in love and falling out of love,” he continued. “That’s a comfort zone for us, so a lot of the lyrical content [frontman] Ben [Gibbard] writes also happens to line up with what the characters are going through in the film. Basically the ‘Twilight’ series is about love, and that’s a major theme for us. So, it wasn’t difficult for us at all.”

As for the song itself, Harmer describes it as “pretty dark and brooding, lyrically,” and though it was written specifically for the “New Moon” film, don’t expect it to vary much from the Death Cab formula.

“I’m pretty sure Ben didn’t try to write a song from the perspective of one of the characters from the novel. The emotional stuff is what he homed in on, because that’s what we do,” he said. “It’s an uptempo song … it fits right into the Death Cab canon. The lyrics are darker and brooding, the music is a little more up. I don’t know if it’s a rock song … when you hear it, you’ll think, ‘Yep, that’s a Death Cab song.’ “
